New animations!

Imperial character model test from Patrick King on Vimeo.

I'm making an Imperial recruitment video, and here are some models I made for it (including a running cycle). The head on the navy officer and navy trooper were taken from a tutorial that came with 3ds Max, but the rest is all me.

Imperial-II Star Destroyer

I had had an unfinished model of a star destroyer in my scenes folder and figured I'd throw on a few more details and finish it up. Looks pretty slick IMO.

New spray painted art!

Took a few tries to get the stencils lined up, but my first attempt at doing multi colored stencils came out looking pretty good.

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Woo-hoo! Second place!

The results are in for the Death Troopers trailer contest, and with 5% of the votes I got second place! Granted, the winner had 89% of the votes (and rightfully so, their video was amazing), it's pretty damn awesome to do so well in a national contest like this.

And just for good measure, here's my video again:

I've got fans!

So thanks to this io9.com article, my stuff has gotten a TON of exposure. I received an email a couple days ago from a guy saying that he was a fan of my stencil designs, and had made some t-shirt screen prints using my design. He even sent me a couple pics, check 'em out!

I also got a mention on Club Jade another sci-fi blog.

Also also, I've got a Snowtrooper saint print coming very soon.

Oh my...

My Imperial Saints are featured quite prominently on this article on io9.com. I gotta say it's pretty satisfying to see my stuff featured so widely. Don't forget to check out the rest of my work on my website www.patrickkingart.com!!

Also they're available as 11x14 prints, framed, for $50.

New art/series: Imperial Saints

I came up with an idea for a new series, called "Imperial Saints," depicting various types of Imperial Troops as saint icons, this being the first:

Saint SK-387, martyred in service to the Galactic Empire while serving aboard the first Death Star.

New art! (kinda)

I've recently gotten into screen printing after finding a tutorial online and seeing how easy it is, and here's my first t-shirt:

Familiar image I know, but it's my favorite, and it came out quite nicely on the shirt. It works especially well as a circle rather than as a square.

Monster, CareerBuilder, Cybercoder, et al...

...can go away.

They haven't gotten me one damn job lead despite applying for over a hundred jobs over the course of the last year and a half plus. The real kicker was this email that I received yesterday afternoon:

Hi Patrick,

The Web Designer position you applied for with CyberCoders on 9/15/2008 has been closed. If it re-opens and you are a fit, we will be in touch!

In the meantime, we have thousands of open positions on our site which you may search through to find a match!

I just now receive a notice that a job opening that I applied for NINE MONTHS AGO is closed.

Thanks for nothing, job sites.

a huge step in the right direction

I started a contract job doing Flash design/programming yesterday! It's incredibly satisfying and fulfilling to work on a job that actually requires my skills and provides a challenge, as opposed to my job at Starbucks making lattes and Frappuccinos for/with a bunch of idiots. Alas, this job only runs until the end of June, so I won't be able to quit the latter anytime soon. Which is especially difficult because after working on Flash stuff, going to work at Starbucks feels like a demotion. Still, it's real-world experience, and it'll look good on a resume.

Deadpooooooooooooooooooooool

Even though he wasn't used very much, seeing Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool got me even more excited about the character (he was the character that got me into comics after all), so I made this:

Something else for fun

Still on my classic Star Wars kick...

I'm thinking about making an Imperial recruitment video set to the Imperial March with lots of stormtroopers, AT-ATs, TIE fighters, star destroyers, etc...

More previews and some Star Wars awesomeness

Here are a couple more preview images of my new video:

Also, since I've been on a major Star Wars kick lately, here's some great Star Wars photoshop jobs I found:

(Kinda) New TF2 art

New TF2 art (finally!)

I had been seriously dragging on this one, but it's finally done. I thought it would be fun/appropriate to have my Engineer poster in the style of the 1950s-era Texas postcards (Here's an example), considering he's a good ol' boy Texan.

The end of an era

I found out a couple days ago that my longtime comics shop, Funny Papers, will be closing down. The store had been struggling for a few months now, what with the massive economic downturn and people spending less (I know I wasn't able to buy comics in January and February), and it's sad to see it go. I've been going there since I got into comics in 2004, and have (with one exception) always had a great rapport with the management and staff there, plus in the last year or so they really helped promote and sell my artwork. The current manager did tell me that they're going to try to re-open a new location somewhere in south Austin. Hopefully they'll get more business there than they had in Dobie Mall, which was rapidly turning into a ghost town.

So I suppose in closing, thanks for everything Funny Papers.

Another addition to the fleet

After being totally impressed with myself with the Excalibur (and getting some great responses to it as well) I thought it'd be fun to develop more ships along the same lines.

So, I bring you the Kusanagi medium attack cruiser:

and the Excalibur for comparison:

The way I see it, the Excalibur is the bulky, heavy carrier, the Kusanagi is the smaller, sleeker attack ship, and the forthcoming Damascus will be a small, fast-attack destroyer.

New animation! (for realsies!)

Okay, I got the file size down to something reasonable, check it out!

New animation (preview)

After nearly 48 hours of rendering, I've created a minute long looping video of a really detailed star cruiser, which I called the Excalibur. I don't have the video down to streaming size yet, but in the meantime enjoy these screenshots!

It's got a bit of Galactica and a bit of Imperial Star Destroyer combined with a basic design I've had since I was a kid.

New animation!

I've been super-frustrated in my job search progress (and lack thereof), and have compared it to trying to beat down a brick wall with my forehead, so here's an illustration of that:

Something for fun...

I had a crap day at work today, so I thought it'd be fun to draw myself as a Red Lantern (that is, a foe of the Green Lanterns driven by rage and hate), complete with Starbucks apron and everything.

New Art

For the next in my Team Fortress 2 class poster series, I went with a worn, poster style for the Medic, with a German-looking font for the bottom and an overall sinister appearance.

I finally joined the cool kids and made myself a Twitter account, so go and visit me there!!

New Art!

I decided to start making posters based on the different classes from Team Fortress 2, with each one done in a style unique to the character. So naturally, I did a Soviet style poster for the Heavy:
